Most common diseases of the oral cavity.
The oral cavity and teeth are indicative of the state of health of people. There are various oral diseases that affect thousands of people and take them to the dentist every year. Below, I present some of the most common diseases related to the oral cavity:
1. Cavities: Cavities affect eighty percent of the world's population at some point in their lives. They are the most common dental disease and can cause oral pain and tooth loss. They occur due to oral bacteria and, paradoxically, they can be prevented with a proper diet and constant oral hygiene¹.
2. Periodontitis: This disease affects the gums and tissues surrounding the teeth. Inflammation and infection can lead to tooth loss if not treated properly.
3. Gingivitis: It is an inflammation of the gums that can cause redness, swelling and bleeding. If left uncontrolled, it can progress to periodontitis.
4. Oral candidiasis (thrush): It is a candida infection that causes white spots in the mouth. It can affect people with weakened immune systems or imbalances in the oral flora.
5. Cold sores: These are painful sores on the lips and around the mouth caused by a virus.
6. Canker sores: They are painful ulcers in the mouth, caused by bacteria or viruses.
7. Oral cancer: Oral cancer is one of the three types of cancer with the highest incidence in Asian regions. More than five hundred and seventy-five thousand new cases are diagnosed globally each year, and ninety percent of cases are detected in people over forty years of age.
Remember that regular oral care, proper hygiene, and visits to the dentist are essential to prevent and treat these diseases. Take care of your oral health! 🦷
